Ocala is the seat of Marion County, in the rolling limestone country of north-central Florida. Its downtown is organised around a central square, with a regular grid of streets stretching out from it, while newer development spreads west toward Interstate 75 in long commercial corridors and curving subdivisions. Beyond the city limits, the map opens into fenced pastures and the roads serving the area's horse farms.
The region calls itself the Horse Capital of the World, and thoroughbred breeding has shaped much of the land around the city. A few miles east lies Silver Springs, one of the largest artesian springs in Florida and long known for its glass-bottom boat tours, and further east the Ocala National Forest stretches across a large area of sand pine scrub and lakes.
