Othukkungal lies in the Malappuram district of northern Kerala, in the midland belt between the coast and the Western Ghats. Like much of this part of the state, it does not have a sharp edge between town and countryside. From above, houses are scattered along roads and lanes that wind over low hills and down into narrow valleys.
The pattern is typical of midland Kerala: a small commercial centre where several roads meet, and around it a dense spread of homes set in their own garden plots among coconut palms and other trees. Low-lying ground in the valleys holds paddy fields and small streams, which appear on a map as open strips between the settled slopes.
