Ponneri is a town in Tiruvallur district, on the low coastal plain north of Chennai. The Arani river passes close by on its way to the sea, and the land around it is flat and well watered, divided into paddy fields, irrigation tanks and small settlements. On the map the town appears as a compact cluster of streets set in a broad, open landscape.
Ponneri is a station on the suburban railway running north from Chennai toward Gummidipoondi, and that line crosses the map as a steady straight stroke. Roads link the town to the coast and to the port and industrial zones that have grown along the shore north of the city, so the surroundings show a mix of village lanes and newer, wider routes.
