Puerto Peñasco lies on the northern shore of the Gulf of California in Sonora, where the Sonoran Desert meets the sea. From above, the town centre sits beside a rocky headland, with the harbour on one side and long beaches curving away to the east and west. Inland, the streets fade quickly into open desert.
The older part of town around the port has a compact grid of streets, while newer development stretches along the coast in lines of hotels, residential areas and resorts. Estuaries and tidal flats interrupt the shoreline in places, creating irregular water shapes beside the regular streets. The whole map has a strong divide between built-up coast and empty land.
