Qibao sits in Minhang District on the western side of Shanghai, and its map is a study in scale. At the centre is a compact old town laid out along narrow canals, with lanes barely wider than a footpath running parallel to the water. Around it, the city has grown in large rectangular superblocks, residential compounds and broad arterial roads that make the historic core look tiny.
The old town traces its origins back roughly a thousand years, and its name, meaning seven treasures, comes from a local legend about precious objects once kept here. Stone bridges cross the main canal at the heart of the quarter, and the pattern of water, bridge and lane is the same one that defined dozens of market towns across the Yangtze delta before the rail era.
