Qitaihe River
The river that gives the city its name runs through the area, its course drawing one of the few natural curves among the roads and rail lines of an industrial city.

Qitaihe Map Poster & Print
Qitaihe lies in the east of Heilongjiang Province, in northeastern China, among low forested hills. The city takes its name from the Qitaihe River, the Seven Terraces River, which runs through the area. Its urban districts are shaped by that terrain, spread between the hills and linked by roads and railway lines rather than gathered into one round centre.
It is a relatively young city that grew around coal mining in the second half of the twentieth century. The map reflects that history in its rail lines, industrial areas and planned residential districts, all arranged around the needs of the mines and the people who worked in them through long northern winters.
Qitaihe is also known across China as a nursery of short track speed skating, the hometown of Olympic champions including Yang Yang and Wang Meng. A Qitaihe map poster marks a place defined by work, winter and sport, drawn simply through its roads, its river and the hills that surround the built-up areas.

Rail and mining lines
Railway tracks and spurs tie the city to the coalfields around it, adding thin, purposeful lines that show how the city was built and supplied.
Surrounding hills
Low hills and forest close in around the built-up areas, so the street network ends in soft, irregular edges rather than a neat outer ring.

Waarom Qitaihe
Een kaart met betekenis
Qitaihe is a city that people often leave for study or work and continue to carry with them. A poster of its streets keeps hometown geography close, or honours a family connection to its mines, schools or skating rinks.
