Rājbirāj is the headquarters of Saptari District in Nepal's Madhesh Province, on the flat Terai plain a short distance from the border with India. It is often described as one of the first planned towns in Nepal, laid out with a regular grid of streets. The countryside around the town is almost perfectly level, crossed by irrigation channels, village tracks and the long, straight roads typical of the Terai.
