Salonta lies in Bihor County in western Romania, a few kilometres from the Hungarian border on the flat expanse of the Pannonian plain. The land around it is open and agricultural, and on a map the town appears as a well-defined cluster of streets surrounded by large fields, with roads and a railway leading toward Oradea and across the border.
Salonta is best known as the birthplace of János Arany, one of the greatest Hungarian poets of the nineteenth century, and the town has a large Hungarian-speaking community. The Csonka Tower, a remnant of old fortifications near the centre, houses a memorial museum dedicated to him and remains the most recognisable landmark in town.
