Muko River valley
The river runs through the centre of the basin. The older town, the railway and the main roads cluster along it, forming the densest part of the map.

Sandachō Map Poster & Print
Sanda lies inland from Kobe, beyond the Rokkō mountains, in a basin crossed by the Muko River. The older town centre gathers near the river and the railway in a compact pattern of streets and small blocks. On a map the valley floor is flat and densely built, and the surrounding hills are dotted with ponds, farm plots and forest.
From the 1980s onward, large planned residential areas were built on the hills, including the Kobe Sanda new towns such as Flower Town and Woody Town. On the map they appear as clean, curving road networks and evenly spaced blocks, very different from the older, irregular core. For about a decade Sanda was among the fastest-growing cities in Japan.
Many people also know the name from Sanda beef, raised in the surrounding region. Between the neighbourhoods lie rice fields and golf courses. A Sandachō map poster shows the balance between the river town, the planned suburbs and the green hills that frame them, with the Rokkō range beyond the southern edge.

New towns on the hills
Planned neighbourhoods such as Flower Town and Woody Town spread across the hills in curved roads and regular blocks. Each forms its own distinct cluster.
Irrigation ponds
Small reservoirs and ponds scattered among the fields and forests add many soft, irregular shapes to the map, especially around the edges of the city.

Waarom Sandachō
Een kaart met betekenis
Many families moved to Sanda's new towns for space and greenery within reach of Kobe and Osaka. A map of the neighbourhood, with a personal title, subtitle and coordinates line, records where that part of life took place.
Classic black & white and Noir emphasise the curving new-town streets, Blueprint makes their planning visible, and Paper or Sand suit the countryside. Order a printed poster, or download the $9 HD set to print locally.
