Sandūr Map Poster & Print
Sandūr lies in the Bellary region of Karnataka, in a valley enclosed by a ring of hills. It was the capital of a small princely state ruled by the Ghorpade family until Indian independence. The hills around it are rich in iron and manganese ore, and mining has long shaped the economy and landscape of the area.
From above, the town sits in the middle of the valley, with a compact centre, streets extending along the roads that lead out of it, and fields filling the valley floor. The hills form an almost continuous frame around this bowl, cut in places by roads and by mining areas. The ancient Kumaraswamy temple stands in the hills south of the town.
