Santa Monica sits on the western edge of Los Angeles, facing Santa Monica Bay. Its street grid is set at an angle to the coast and runs down to the ocean. In the north it ends at palm-lined bluffs above the Pacific Coast Highway, and in the south the land descends toward Ocean Park and Venice. A wide beach runs along the entire waterfront.
The pier extends straight out into the bay from the foot of Colorado Avenue and is often described as the symbolic end of Route 66. Nearby, the Third Street Promenade forms a pedestrian spine downtown. Interstate 10 reaches its western end here, merging into the coast highway at the edge of the city.
