Shuozhou Map Poster & Print
Shuozhou lies in the northern part of Shanxi Province, in a high basin near the upper reaches of the Sanggan River. The land here is dry and open, and the loess country stretches toward the Inner Mongolian border. On a map the city appears as a planned urban area with wide straight avenues, surrounded by farmland and open land.
The central districts are divided by broad arterial roads into large blocks, typical of Chinese cities rebuilt and expanded in recent decades. Rail lines serving the coal industry cross the region, and they appear as long, gently curving lines. Toward the edges, the regular city pattern gives way to villages, fields and the terraced slopes of the loess hills.
The area around Shuozhou has long been a frontier region, and remains of Great Wall sections lie within the prefecture. Its best-known landmark is the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda at Fogong Temple, built in 1056 and often described as the oldest fully wooden pagoda in China.
