South Georgia Map Poster & Print
South Georgia is a remote British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, east of the Falkland Islands. From above it is a long, curving island of high mountains, about 170 kilometres from end to end. Glaciers flow from the central ranges down to the sea, and the coastline is broken by countless bays and fjords.
There is no permanent population. A small group of government staff and scientists lives at King Edward Point, beside the former whaling station of Grytviken in Cumberland Bay. Other abandoned whaling stations stand in sheltered harbours along the northern coast. They are the only built features on an otherwise icy map.
Ernest Shackleton ended his famous rescue journey at Stromness in 1916. He is buried at Grytviken. The island is also home to vast colonies of king penguins and seals. A South Georgia map poster captures the dramatic, deeply cut outline of one of the wildest islands on earth.
