Takāb lies in the southeast of West Azerbaijan province, in a high valley surrounded by mountains. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets on the valley floor, with roads leading out through the folds of the hills. Farmland and orchards follow the watercourses, while the mountain slopes around them remain open and largely empty.
The area is best known for Takht-e Soleyman, a UNESCO World Heritage site northeast of the town. It holds the remains of a Sasanian fire temple built around a spring-fed crater lake, one of the most important sanctuaries of Zoroastrianism in its time. The surrounding mountains are also known for mineral deposits, including gold.
