Tambolaka is the main town of Southwest Sumba Regency, in the northwestern part of Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara. It is a relatively new administrative centre, and its map shows this. The streets are few and widely spaced, the buildings are loosely scattered, and there is a lot of open land between them. The regency offices and the town centre are gathered along the main roads.
Tambolaka airport is one of the main entry points to Sumba, and its runway is a clear straight line on the map. To the north lies the coast. The surrounding landscape is rolling farmland and savanna, with the typical dry-season palette of eastern Indonesia. Traditional Sumbanese villages with tall, peaked roofs are found in the countryside around the town.
