Market square
The broad central square is the heart of the town's plan, a large open shape surrounded by closely built plots, where fairs and markets were held for centuries.

Târgu Secuiesc Map Poster & Print
Târgu Secuiesc, known in Hungarian as Kézdivásárhely, is a small town in Covasna County in the Székely Land of eastern Transylvania. It grew up as a market and craft guild town, and most of its residents are Hungarian-speaking. The mountains of the Eastern Carpathians rise to the east.
Its plan is unusual. At the centre is a long, wide market square, and from its sides many narrow lanes lead back into the old building plots. These courtyard alleys are called udvarterek, and they give the old town a comb-like pattern that is unlike any other Romanian town. Beyond that core, the streets open out into the farmland of the Kézdi basin.
A Târgu Secuiesc map poster shows the plan clearly: the open market square in the middle, the fine teeth of the lanes around it, and the roads running out across the plain toward the hills.

Courtyard lanes
Narrow alleys lead off the square into the old plots. On a map they form a distinctive comb-like pattern, which is the town's most recognisable feature from above.
Basin setting
The town sits on a flat basin floor with mountains rising in the distance. The roads fan out across open fields toward neighbouring villages.

Waarom Târgu Secuiesc
Een kaart met betekenis
The town's layout is rare enough to deserve a place on the wall on its own merits. For anyone from the Székely Land, it is also an image of home, drawn with nothing but its streets.
