Tolosa lies in the Oria valley in the province of Gipuzkoa, where the river winds along a narrow valley floor between wooded slopes. The town stays close to the water. From above you can trace the old quarter on the bank, the bridges that join the two sides and the newer blocks that spread up the valley wherever the ground allows.
For a short time in the nineteenth century Tolosa was the capital of Gipuzkoa, and its compact centre still reflects that civic role, with squares and arcaded streets near the river. Today the town is known across Spain for its beans, its carnival and a long-running Saturday market held in the heart of the old town.
