Tuttlingen sits on the young Danube in southern Baden-Württemberg, where the river cuts through the edge of the Swabian Jura. After a fire destroyed much of the town in 1803, the centre was rebuilt on a regular plan. From above, the core shows straight streets and rectangular blocks, rare in a region where most old towns grew in tangles.
The Danube runs through the town in a gentle curve, and bridges cross it at intervals, while wooded slopes close in on either side of the valley. On the hill above the town stand the ruins of Honberg castle. Outside the planned centre, the streets start to follow the terrain, climbing and bending along the valley sides.
Tuttlingen is known as a centre of medical technology, home to many makers of surgical instruments, and the large industrial sites show up on the map as broad, simple footprints.
