Ürgüp lies in the heart of Cappadocia, in a landscape carved from soft volcanic tuff. The town climbs the slopes of a valley, with old stone houses and cave dwellings cut into the rock above newer streets below. On the map, the lanes curve and stack along the contours in an organic, layered pattern.
Above the center rises Temenni Hill, a viewpoint over the town and the valleys beyond. Around Ürgüp, erosion has produced the famous fairy chimneys, rock cones and canyons that draw visitors from around the world.
