The northern shore
The coastline runs along the top of the town like a ruled line. Open water lies beyond it, and the built area stretches close along its length.

Valvedditturai Map Poster & Print
Valvedditturai lies on the northern coast of the Jaffna Peninsula in Sri Lanka's Northern Province. Its most prominent map feature is the shoreline, a long, almost straight edge of land facing the open water to the north. The town follows this coast in an east–west band instead of forming a compact centre.
For generations the town has been tied to the sea through fishing, boatbuilding and coastal trade. On the map this shows in the lanes that run from the inland roads down to the water. They cross a main coastal road that links Valvedditturai with the neighbouring settlements along the peninsula's northern edge.
A Valvedditturai map poster reduces all of this to a very simple structure: a coastline, a parallel road and a comb of short streets between them. Beyond the town is the flat, low-lying land of the peninsula, with its small fields and scattered settlements. It is a quiet, horizontal composition that follows the rhythm of a coastal town.

Coastal road
A main road runs parallel to the shore and links Valvedditturai with neighbouring towns on the peninsula. It forms the spine the rest of the street pattern hangs from.
Lanes to the sea
Short lanes lead from the coastal road down to the water. This fine, comb-like pattern reflects how closely daily life here has been tied to fishing and boats.
