Steep surroundings
Ridges and valleys press in on every side, so the settlement appears as a tight, irregular shape set within wide areas of open hillside.

Yihe Map Poster & Print
Yihe is a town in the northeastern part of Chongqing Municipality, in the mountainous country north of the Yangtze that is part of the wider Three Gorges region. The landscape is one of steep ridges, deep valleys and terraced slopes. The town's streets settle into whatever level ground the terrain allows.
From above, the result is an irregular settlement rather than a grid. Buildings crowd along the main roads, while side streets climb a short way up the slopes before giving way to terraced fields and woodland. Roads out of town wind through the hills in long curves, following the contours toward neighbouring towns and villages.
A Yihe map poster reads almost like a relief drawing: a close cluster of streets surrounded by the curving lines of mountain roads. It is a strong subject for people from the town or the surrounding districts of Chongqing. It is also a distinctive picture of how a settlement adapts to difficult, beautiful terrain.

Terraced hills
Terraced farmland on the hills around the town, typical of northeastern Chongqing, shows on the map as broad open space between roads and scattered hamlets.
Winding roads
Roads into and out of Yihe loop and double back as they climb, drawing expressive curves that give the poster its sense of movement.
