The town was established in the 1950s and has grown in stages up the hillside, so its streets follow contour lines rather than a grid, curving in terraced arcs around the slope. From above, the result is a series of layered bands, with the flat valley opening out below.
Close by stands Tel Yokneam, an ancient mound mentioned in biblical sources, which gives the place its name.
