Zhenping is a county-level town in the Nanyang area of southwestern Henan. It lies on the gently tilted floor of the Nanyang basin, where the plain begins to rise toward the Funiu mountains in the north. On the map, the town is a compact, fairly regular grid. It is surrounded by the fine subdivisions of intensively farmed land and dotted with villages.
The town is best known in China for jade. Zhenping has long been a centre of jade carving and trading, and its markets and workshops draw buyers from across the country. That craft sits in contrast with the plain geometry of its streets, where broad roads divide the town into large, orderly blocks.
