Zishui lies in the mountainous north-east of Chongqing Municipality, where flat ground is scarce and every settlement has to negotiate with slopes. On a map the town appears as a compact knot of streets gathered where the valley opens slightly, with roads bending to follow the terrain rather than any grid. Beyond the centre the drawing quickly thins into hillsides, scattered hamlets and narrow lanes climbing toward the ridges.
