Acapulco de Juárez is built around one of the best natural harbours on Mexico's Pacific coast. From above, the bay is a near-perfect curve, and the city follows it closely because it has little choice. Steep mountains rise just behind the shore, so streets climb in switchbacks and neighbourhoods cling to the slopes wherever the ground allows.
The Costera Miguel Alemán runs along the water, linking the old town on the western side of the bay with the hotel strip further east. On a map it reads as one continuous line tracing the beach. Beyond the eastern headland, the coast continues towards Puerto Marqués and the Diamante zone, where newer resorts spread across flatter land.
The city's past is maritime. For more than two centuries it was the American end of the Manila galleon route, and the Fort of San Diego still overlooks the port. A single long avenue follows the curve of the bay east from the old town. It shows the hotel zone as a thin ribbon of streets between the sand and the hillside.
