Agra is shaped by the Yamuna, which enters from the north and swings in a wide curve along the city's eastern side. Almost everything of historical weight lines this riverbank. On a map the water appears as a broad, slightly meandering band, with the dense old city pressed against its western bank and quieter, greener land spreading out on the opposite shore.

A walled enclosure shaped roughly like a crescent along the Yamuna, about two and a half kilometres upstream of the Taj, its outline instantly recognisable in black and white.
