Água Preta lies in the Zona da Mata of southern Pernambuco, the humid coastal hinterland long devoted to sugarcane. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on uneven ground, surrounded by rolling fields. Rivers and streams wind through the valleys nearby, and the green of cultivated land dominates the space around the built-up area.
The street pattern is typical of an interior town in the region: a main axis through the centre, a church and square as its focal point, and residential streets branching off where the slopes allow.
