Águilas lies on the Mediterranean coast of Murcia, where a rocky headland crowned by the castle of San Juan divides two bays. The modern town was laid out in the eighteenth century under Charles III, and its regular streets are still clear on the map, filling the flat land at the foot of the castle hill.
To either side the coastline breaks into coves, beaches and small promontories, while dry hills rise inland. The contrast between the orderly town grid and the rugged coastal outline gives the map a strong character.
