Aix-les-Bains lies in Savoie, in the French Alps, on the eastern shore of the Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake entirely within France. The town has been known for its thermal springs since Roman times and became a fashionable spa resort in the nineteenth century. Its map reflects both periods, and the lake is always present, filling the western side of the frame.
The centre sits slightly above the lake. Here the Roman arch of Campanus and the remains of a Roman temple stand near the thermal baths. Streets descend towards the shore through residential districts and gardens, reaching the lakeside at the Grand Port and the Petit Port, with a long promenade between them. Behind the town, the land rises towards Mont Revard.
The lake has literary fame too: Lamartine's poem Le Lac was inspired by his stays here. The town centre gathers around the thermal baths and Roman remains, including the Arch of Campanus, in a compact pattern of winding streets.
The two ports
