Ajaigarh lies in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, where the Vindhyan plateau breaks into steep-sided hills. The town grew at the base of one of them. On the map, its lanes form an irregular cluster of short streets that bend with the ground and never settle into a formal grid.
Above the town rises the hill of Ajaigarh Fort, an old stronghold with roots in the Chandela period and later the seat of the princely state of Ajaigarh.
