Akot lies in the Akola district of Maharashtra, in the Vidarbha region, on the flat black-soil plains south of the Satpura range. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets around its old market area, with roads leading south toward Akola and north toward the hills. Farmland surrounds it on every side.
The region around Akot is known for cotton, and the town has long worked as a trading and ginning centre for the crop grown on the surrounding farms. To the north, the land rises into the forested hills of the Satpuras, where the Melghat tiger reserve lies.
