Al Mayādīn lies on the Euphrates in eastern Syria, downstream from Deir ez-Zor. From above the town follows the river closely. A band of housing and streets runs along the bank, with a narrow strip of irrigated fields on the floodplain and the pale open desert beyond.
A short distance from the town stand the remains of Rahba Castle, a medieval fortress on a rise overlooking the Euphrates valley. It is one of the most recognisable historic sites in the region. The river has supported settlement here for a very long time, and the town grew as a local market and farming centre.
