Al-Tabqa sits on the southern bank of the Euphrates in northern Syria, directly beside the Tabqa Dam. The dam holds back Lake Assad, the country's largest reservoir, which stretches for many kilometres upstream. On a map, that body of water is the most prominent feature by far, a broad, irregular shoreline that fills much of the composition.
The modern city grew mostly in the 1960s and 1970s alongside the construction of the dam, and for a time it was officially known as al-Thawra. Much of it was laid out as a planned town for workers and their families, with a series of numbered residential districts. Below the dam, the Euphrates continues east as a narrower river towards Raqqa, lined by irrigated farmland. The dam wall itself appears as a short, straight line across the water, a small detail on the map that explains everything else. The Tabqa Dam
The dam wall crosses the Euphrates as a short, straight barrier. That one line separates the wide lake from the narrower river continuing downstream.
Planned districts
The city's residential areas, built in stages for the dam's workforce, appear as regular blocks and broad roads. They are clearly different from the older towns in the region.
