Aldeias Altas is a municipality in the east of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, in the region around the city of Caxias. Its name translates as high villages, and like many towns in the interior of the state it combines a small urban centre with a large rural territory of farms, scattered communities and open land.
The town itself follows the regular block pattern common to many small towns in the Brazilian interior. From there, roads run out across the countryside in long, gently curving lines, connecting outlying settlements.
