Alfenas lies in the south of Minas Gerais, in hilly coffee country. From above, the town spreads over rolling high ground, with streets that follow the slopes rather than a strict grid. Beyond the edges of town, the long arms of the Furnas reservoir reach into the valleys, and their branching, irregular outlines are among the most striking features of the region.
The reservoir was created when the Furnas dam flooded the Rio Grande valley in the 1960s, turning river valleys into a lake that stretches across much of southern Minas. Alfenas is also a university town, home to the Federal University of Alfenas, and students give it a younger character than its size might suggest.

Streets follow the rolling terrain, curving over and around the hills. The town has a softer, more irregular plan than the flat grids of the interior.

The Federal University campus forms a distinct area within the town, with larger buildings and open spaces among the residential blocks.
