Ambarawa lies in the uplands of Central Java, in a basin ringed by volcanic mountains, with Merbabu to the south and Ungaran to the north. The town sits on the main road between Semarang and Magelang. On a map it forms a compact grid of streets along that route, with farmland and villages climbing the slopes around it.
Just to the south-east lies Rawa Pening, a broad, shallow lake whose surface is often partly covered by water hyacinth. It is the largest feature on the map around Ambarawa, a soft, irregular shape against the sharper lines of roads and field boundaries. Streams run into it from the surrounding hills, and small settlements line its shore.
Ambarawa is known for its railway museum in a nineteenth-century station. Steam locomotives still run heritage trips from there, and a rack section climbs toward Bedono. The old station and the line toward Bedono trace a clear route across the landscape. They are remnants of a network that once linked Ambarawa with Semarang and Yogyakarta.
