Ambasamudram lies in Tirunelveli district in southern Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the Thamirabarani river. On a map the river is the main organising feature, curving past the town with its bed and banks clearly visible. The streets cluster on the land beside it, with temple-centred lanes in the older areas and roads leading out across the plain.
To the west rise the Western Ghats, and the town is a gateway toward Papanasam and the hills beyond, where the river descends from the mountains. On a map the transition is visible as the settled plain gives way to the empty, uneven ground of the ranges.
