Amposta is the capital of the Montsià comarca in southern Catalonia, on the lower Ebro just before the river enters its delta. It is known for its early twentieth-century suspension bridge over the Ebro. Rice paddies spread out around the town into the Ebro Delta, a large wetland area that is also a nature park.
On a map, the Ebro dominates, a broad river crossing the frame, with the town on its bank. The older streets sit close to the water, and newer districts spread further inland.
