An Nabk lies in the Qalamoun region north of Damascus, on the high ground between the Anti-Lebanon mountains and the Syrian desert. It stands at over a thousand metres, so winters are cold and summers are dry. On a map the town is compact, and the main highway between Damascus and Homs runs close by and fixes its position.
The town is best known for its closeness to Deir Mar Musa al-Habashi, a monastery built into a cliff in the desert mountains to the east. Its church contains medieval frescoes, and in recent decades it became known as a place of dialogue between Christians and Muslims. The land around An Nabk is dry, rocky and sparsely settled.
