Anagé is a municipality in southwest Bahia, in the semi-arid interior known as the sertão, not far from the city of Vitória da Conquista. The town is small, and on a map it appears as a tidy block grid with a few main roads leading out across dry, lightly settled countryside.
This is a landscape shaped by scarce water. The surrounding land is covered in caatinga scrub and pasture, crossed by seasonal streams and dotted with ponds and small reservoirs that hold water through the dry months. Farm tracks and fence lines divide the country into large irregular parcels.
