Anseong lies in the southern part of Gyeonggi-do, where the dense suburbs of the capital region give way to farmland and low, wooded hills. From above, the town centre sits along the Anseong stream, and a network of smaller streets branches off it. Several reservoirs to the north and east appear as irregular shapes of still water set among the fields.
The town has a long history as a market centre. Its brassware was once so well regarded that the phrase Anseong matchum, made to order the Anseong way, became a Korean expression for something done just right. Anseong is also known for the Namsadang, a travelling folk troupe whose performances are still staged here.
