Antsiranana, also known as Diego-Suarez, lies near the northern tip of Madagascar. It sits on a peninsula in a huge, complex bay that ranks among the world's largest natural harbours. On a map, the water dominates: arms of the bay reach deep into the land, and the town takes up a small, well-defined piece of ground surrounded by sea.
The town's layout reflects its colonial past as a French naval base. The street grid is fairly regular, with wide avenues running across the peninsula and port facilities along the waterfront.
