Ar Rastan lies in the Homs Governorate of western Syria, on the main route between Homs and Hama. On a map the town appears as a compact grid of streets set on a plateau, with the Orontes river running below it through a valley that widens into a reservoir held back by a dam.
The site has ancient roots and is identified with Arethusa, a town known in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Its position on the Orontes and along the north–south corridor of Syria has long made it a place where river and road meet.
