Ar Riyāḑ is a town in Kafr el-Sheikh governorate, in the northern part of the Nile Delta, one of the most intensively farmed landscapes in the world. From above, the town appears as a dense cluster of buildings and narrow streets surrounded by an intricate pattern of fields, each parcel bordered by irrigation channels and rural tracks.
Water shapes everything here. Canals and drains carry water from the Nile branches across the flat delta, and roads frequently run alongside them.
