Araioses lies in the far east of Maranhão, close to the border with Piauí and within the landscape of the Parnaíba River delta. On a wider map the setting is unmistakable: the river breaks into a web of channels, islands and mangrove edges as it approaches the Atlantic.
The town itself is compact, a modest grid of streets set on the mainland beside this watery maze. Roads lead out into the surrounding countryside, while the delta to the north and east turns the frame into an intricate pattern of land and water.
