Ardea lies south of Rome in Lazio, and its map has two very different parts. The historic centre sits on a narrow tuff spur, a compact knot of streets on high ground bounded by steep edges. Around it and down towards the sea, the municipality spreads into newer residential districts laid out across the flat coastal plain.
Ardea is one of the oldest towns in the region. In Roman legend it was the capital of the Rutuli, the people led by Turnus in Virgil's Aeneid. The town is also home to a museum dedicated to the sculptor Giacomo Manzù, who lived and worked here.
