Arnold sits on the Broadneck Peninsula in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a few miles north of Annapolis. It is a community without a town centre in the usual sense. From above, it looks like a mesh of curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs set among trees, with water close by on almost every side as the Chesapeake Bay's tidal rivers push inland.
The Magothy River lies to the north and the Severn River to the south, and both break into many narrow creeks that cut deep into the land. The shoreline turns into a ragged, branching outline, and private piers and small marinas dot the coves. Ritchie Highway, Maryland Route 2, runs through as the main north–south spine, with the local roads branching off it toward the water.
Anne Arundel Community College has its main campus in Arnold, and its buildings and car parks form one of the larger open shapes in an otherwise leafy pattern. Ritchie Highway spine
Maryland Route 2 cuts a straight line through the area. Most of the curving neighbourhood streets connect to it, and it sets a clear axis across the peninsula.
