Asan in South Chungcheong Province covers a wide area of plains, low hills and streams running down to Asan Bay on the Yellow Sea. From above, the older Onyang district forms a dense core, while newer residential and industrial zones spread across the flatter land to the north and west.
Onyang has been known for its hot springs for centuries, with Joseon kings among its visitors. Asan is also associated with Admiral Yi Sun-sin, whose family home and memorial shrine, Hyeonchungsa, lie within the city.

Streams to the bay
Several streams cross the plain towards Asan Bay. On the map they add soft lines through fields and new districts before meeting the wide water to the northwest.
