Ascoli Piceno sits in the southern Marche, on a spur of land where the Castellano stream flows into the Tronto River. On a map the two watercourses almost encircle the historic centre, and the old town fills the space between them. The centre is built largely from pale travertine and is often called the city of a hundred towers, after the medieval tower houses that once rose over it.
