Aviemore lies in Strathspey, in the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. On a map the town stretches along one main street, with the River Spey curving nearby and the railway running parallel. To the south and east, forest and lochs spread towards the Cairngorm mountains, and a road leads up to the ski area on the high slopes.
The town grew with the arrival of the railway. Today it is a base for skiing, walking and wildlife watching in the Cairngorms. The Cairngorm Mountain ski area has a funicular railway to the upper slopes, and nearby Loch Morlich and the Rothiemurchus forest are popular in every season. The Strathspey Railway, a heritage steam line, also runs from the town.
